The Reborning Process

The reborning process varies from artist to artist.. I have taken several classes from many talented  reborn artist over the past 8 years. I have also learned alot from studying online tutorials and purchased many DVD's as well. I have found that reborning is an art you never stop learning. Each artist has different techniques that they have found works best for them, from mixing their paints to achieve their desired color, applying their paints, using certain brushes, sponges, etc.

I have many people ask me if I look at pictures when reborning a baby and the answer is NO!  I began with washing my desired kit with warm water and Dawn dish detergent. After drying, I began with up to 2 coats of a green wash to neutralize the vinyl. After I am satisfied, my next step would be to begin applying  several coats of flesh ( mixed to my desired color) My next step for me would  be to lightly apply several coats of blushing ( mottling )to my limbs and head. I apply each coat very lightly to achieve that realistic newborn baby skin tones.  Between each coat of my green washes, flesh layers and blushing/mottling my head and limbs are placed inside my NUWAVE oven on 50% power for 7-8 minutes. Many steps go into bringing a baby to life...green wash, flesh layers, blushing, mottling, creasing, veining, nail tips, and so on. Not to mention the time and supplies needed to weigh the baby properly.

I am also asked often how long does the reborning process take..and that is a very hard question to answer. It really depends on the size of the kit, whether you are leaving the baby bald, painting the hair or rooting the hair. The average baby takes approximately 25 to 40 hours from start to finish.

Below are several pictures of my work area, Nuwave oven that I use between each layer of painting to heat set the permanent paint into the vinyl, several reborn kits I am currently working on, one of my 2 closets full of reborn kits waiting to be brought to life and more and a few babies in the works.
